Safety headwear should be selected according to the hazards identified within the workplace. A hard hat, bump cap, pair of ear defenders and illuminated beanie each serve a different purpose, even though they are grouped within the same archive.
The current collection includes protective headwear and related products from Portwest and Yoko. These are the Portwest Expertbase Safety Helmet, Portwest Endurance Visor Hard Hat, Yoko Hi-Vis Safety Bump Cap, Portwest Classic Ear Protectors and Portwest LED Head Light Beanie.
The Portwest Expertbase Safety Helmet provides a traditional hard-hat design for workplaces where suitable impact protection is required. Available features include an adjustable internal harness and compatibility with selected accessories. Employers should review the current product documentation, declared standards, adjustment range and accessory compatibility before issuing it to employees.
Construction hard hats are commonly required where a residual risk of head injury remains after other controls have been introduced. This can include risks from falling or displaced objects and striking the head against workplace structures. The employer’s risk assessment should determine the exact type of helmet required.
The Portwest Endurance Visor Hard Hat combines an industrial safety helmet with an integrated visor. A visor hard hat can be useful where both head and eye or face coverage are required, but the protection offered by each component must be checked separately. The visor should not automatically be treated as suitable for every impact, chemical splash, heat or electrical hazard.
Safety helmets and visors must be worn and adjusted according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The internal harness should fit the wearer securely, and the helmet should not move excessively when the employee bends or turns their head. Unapproved padding, stickers, drilling or physical alterations could affect its performance.
The Yoko Hi-Vis Safety Bump Cap provides a different type of head protection. Bump caps are generally intended for environments where the wearer may strike their head against fixed objects. They are not substitutes for industrial safety helmets where there is a risk from falling or projected objects.
Hi-vis bump caps can make the wearer more noticeable, but their fluorescent fabric and reflective details do not provide the same visible area as a certified high-visibility garment. Where employee visibility is required, a bump cap should be used alongside suitable clothing selected through the workplace risk assessment.
The Portwest Classic Ear Protectors are included within this headwear archive but provide hearing protection rather than impact protection. The required attenuation should be selected according to the employee’s noise exposure. Ear defenders should not simply be chosen according to appearance or maximum available noise reduction.
The Portwest LED Head Light Beanie combines a knitted beanie with a removable light. An LED beanie can provide convenient local illumination for selected tasks, but it should not be treated as an industrial safety helmet, bump cap or replacement for properly planned workplace lighting.

Workplace head protection needs to fit the wearer, remain in good condition and work correctly with any additional PPE. A helmet that is technically suitable but worn loosely, backwards or with incompatible accessories may not provide its intended performance.
Safety helmets should be adjusted using the internal headband or harness. The wearer should check that the helmet remains secure without creating excessive pressure. Hair, head coverings and other items worn underneath can affect the fit and should be considered during selection.

A bump cap should be assessed separately from a safety helmet. Its lower-profile design can suit some indoor environments where employees may hit their heads against shelving, equipment or fixed structures. It should not be issued where the risk assessment requires a construction hard hat or industrial helmet.
The Yoko bump cap currently displays embroidery and printing options. Branding must not cover required markings, reflective details or functional ventilation areas. Decoration should also avoid the protective insert unless the approved customisation method specifically permits it.
The Portwest LED Head Light Beanie also displays personalisation options. Embroidery can allow a business logo to be added to a suitable fabric area, although the removable light, cuff, seams and stretch of the knit may restrict the available position.
Personalised safety headwear should never be altered purely to create more space for a logo. The current Expertbase Safety Helmet, Endurance Visor Hard Hat and Classic Ear Protectors do not display archive-page embroidery or printing options and should not be offered as personalised products without confirmation.
Workplace hearing protection requires a separate assessment. The Health and Safety Executive advises employers to select ear defenders that reduce noise sufficiently without causing unnecessary overprotection. Excessive attenuation can make communication and warning signals harder to hear.
Ear defenders also need to form the intended seal around the ears. Spectacle arms, long hair, jewellery, hats and other PPE can interfere with the cushions. The complete combination should be checked rather than assessing each item individually.
Employees should receive instructions explaining when, where and how their head protection or ear defenders must be worn. They should also know how to inspect the product, report damage, obtain replacements and store it correctly when not in use.

The wearer must still be able to see hazards and remain visible to others.

An integrated visor can provide convenient eye or face coverage for the hazards stated within its product specification, but no visor protects against every impact, dust, chemical, heat or electrical risk. Employers should check the visor’s current markings, coverage and limitations against the task. Gaps around the face and compatibility with respiratory or hearing protection should also be considered. Separate safety spectacles, sealed goggles or another face-protection product may still be necessary where the integrated visor does not meet the requirements of the risk assessment.

They need to reduce harmful noise sufficiently without creating unnecessary overprotection that makes communication or warning signals difficult to hear. Fit, comfort, hygiene and compatibility with helmets, spectacles and other PPE must also be checked. Hair, headwear and spectacle arms can prevent the cushions from sealing correctly. Employees should be trained to fit, inspect and maintain their hearing protection and understand when it must be worn or replaced.
